Ash-Shams 91:8

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا

“And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every soul was given, whole and before any argument, a knowing of what would breach it and what would shield it.

A reflection

Knowledge swallowed whole

The root of alhama is swallowing. The Arabs said a camel calf drained the udder in gulps. A racehorse 'swallowed' the ground. A vast army swallowed everything it met. Ilhām is something cast into the heart and taken in whole, before you could reason your way to it.

One classical scholar insists on the strength of the word. Nobody, he says, calls it ilhām when one person explains something to another. Teaching is from outside. Ilhām is placed inside.

Think about where that places Allah's work. Parents can instruct. Teachers can explain. Advertisers can persuade, and a culture can shape. None of them can reach the place where the soul simply knows. That place was reached before any of them arrived.

Picture a man at a supermarket self-checkout on a busy Saturday. Halfway to the car park he realises the case of water under his trolley was never scanned. Nobody saw. The machine did not beep. He could drive home. Instead he feels a small, stubborn weight, turns round and walks back. He could not explain where that weight came from. He simply knew.

We like to think our goodness is our own achievement. I am a decent person. I would never do that. The ayah humbles that pride. The compass was placed in you. You did not build it; you are only choosing whether to steer by it.

Why would Allah tell us He did this? Not because He needs the credit. 'Allah is the Rich, and you are the poor' (47:38). He tells us so that we trust the voice inside that says 'don't', and know it is more than a habit or a culture. It is a gift from the One who proportioned the soul, given before we knew to ask.
