Al-Qari'ah 101:4

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ

“It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,[1975]”

Saheeh International

Essence

On that Day people rise like moths stirred from hiding, weightless and scattered, and the one who warned us is the one who held us back from the flame.

A reflection

A hand on your waist-wrapper

On bonfire night a crowd gathers behind a rope at the edge of a playing field. Sparks lift into the dark. A six-year-old keeps edging forward, fascinated, and his father keeps a hand hooked in the back of his hood. Every few minutes the boy pulls. Every few minutes the hand pulls back. The boy thinks his father is spoiling the fun.

The Prophet ﷺ drew almost exactly this picture. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report him saying that his example and ours is like a man who lit a fire. When it lit up everything around him, moths and the small creatures that fall into fire began throwing themselves into it. He kept pulling them away, and they kept overpowering him and plunging in. I am holding you by your waist-wrappers, away from the Fire, he said, and you keep rushing into it. In one narration in Sahih Muslim he calls out: come away from the Fire, come away from the Fire.

Now read this ayah beside that hadith. Yawma yakūnu al-nāsu ka-l-farāshi al-mabthūth: the Day people will be like scattered moths. The moth is the Quran's image for people on the Day of Rising. It is also the Prophet's ﷺ image for people in this life, circling a fire that will burn them.

That changes the tone of the comparison completely. It is not a sneer from above. The one who taught us to see ourselves as moths is the one standing by the fire with his hand on our clothes. The image is spoken by someone who does not want us to fall.

It also shows what he feared for us. Not that we would hate the good, but that we would be drawn, lightly and eagerly, towards harm, as a moth is drawn by light. Most people do not walk into wrong with a plan. They drift towards whatever glows.

Think of the hands on your hood. The reminder that arrives at the right moment. The friend who says 'not tonight'. The ayah you happen to hear on the way to a bad decision. It is easy to resent them. They may be the grip of mercy.
