Al-Qari'ah 101:6
فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ
“Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],”
Saheeh International
Essence
On that Day worth is weight: what counts is what made your scale sink, and some of the heaviest things are the lightest to carry now.
A reflection
Lifted in the hand
The week after the school secretary retires, nothing works. The supply teachers cannot find the keys. Nobody knows which parent must never be phoned before ten. The trip money is in an envelope no one can locate. For twenty-six years she was simply there, and no one had noticed how much she was holding until she put it down.
The Arabs had a physical picture for that kind of weight. A herdsman would thaqala a sheep: lift it in his hand to feel how heavy it was, as against how light. Weight was the first test of worth. From bodies the word moved to people. The Arabs said a brave and generous horseman was a weight on the earth, and when he died, a weight fell from it. A poet mourning her brother used the image. One who counted for nothing, by contrast, had 'no weight with me'. These usages are established in the lexicons.
That is the world this ayah speaks into. Fa-ammā man thaqulat mawāzīnuh: as for the one whose scales are heavy. One classical explanation reads mawāzīn not only as scales but as the things weighed: deeds that have weight and worth with Allah. On that reading, the ayah asks the herdsman's question of a whole life. Lift it. How much is really there?
Notice what the question ignores. It does not ask how loud the life was, how visible, how busy. The school secretary never gave a speech. Her weight was discovered by her absence. Many of the heaviest lives on earth are like that: carrying others quietly, day after day, noticed only when they stop.
Notice too that the ayah begins with the heavy scale, before the light one (101:8). The surah's first picture of success after the moths and the wool is not a crown or a medal. It is weight: something solid in the hand when everything else has turned to fluff.
So it is worth asking the herdsman's question of your own week. If it were lifted, what in it would have weight? And who around you is carrying something heavy that you have not yet noticed or thanked?
