Essence
The One who holds up the sky without pillars you can see can stretch pillars across a door, and the surah ends there.
A reflection
Pillars you cannot see
An ʿamūd is a tent pole, a column, any long beam of wood or iron that a building stands on. To ʿamada a thing was to prop it up so that it could lean on the prop. Its cousin ʿimād is what you lean on. People who lived only in tents were called the people of the pole. One lexicon reads this ayah as 'in something like tents of fire, stretched out'.
The same plural, ʿamad, appears in another ayah: Allah raised the heavens without pillars that you see (13:2). Classical commentators note that some early authorities preferred this reading of the word here precisely to match that ayah. One word, two worlds. Invisible pillars that hold up the sky over everyone, maintained by no one you have ever paid. And visible pillars stretched across a door that will not open.
Now look at what the man of this surah leaned on. His money was his ʿudda, his store against the blows of time (104:2). It was his pillar. He built his whole life on it, and at the end it is pillars that hold him in.
Ask yourself what you are leaning on. The pension, the property, the partner's salary, the reputation. Some of these are blessings. None of them holds up the sky.
Picture a tent at a desert camp in a night wind. Everything depends on the central pole. If it is sound, the family sleeps; if it cracks, the whole shelter comes down on them. The Arabs who first heard this ayah knew that feeling in their bones. They knew exactly how much weight a single pole carries.
Tonight, look up at the sky, resting on nothing you can see. Then lean your weight on the One who holds it.
