Yusuf · Makki · ayah 64 of 111

Yusuf 12:64

“He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allāh is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Yaqub refuses to lean on his sons' promise a second time, and leans instead on the best of guardians, the most merciful of the merciful.

A reflection

The only guardian whose eye does not close

Every parent carries a quiet pride, rarely spoken. If I watch closely enough, nothing will happen to them.

A mother waits up every night her son drives back from university. She sits by the window until the headlights turn into the road, as though her being awake kept the motorway safe. She knows it does not. She does it anyway.

Yaqub had watched closely too. He had kept Yusuf near, loved him openly, worried about the wolf. And still the boy was lost, in a single afternoon, to the very people who promised to guard him.

This ayah is where a father's ego about his own vigilance finally gives way.

Allah is the best guardian. Not the brothers, who failed. Not Yaqub, who could not be everywhere. The word for guarding pictured a herdsman whose eye sleep could not overcome. No human herdsman truly fits that picture. Only One does.

The Qur'an says it plainly elsewhere: neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.

And then the second half: He is the most merciful of the merciful. The guarding is not cold surveillance. Sahih al-Bukhari records the Prophet pointing to a mother among the captives, clutching and feeding any infant she found. Allah, he said, is more merciful to His servants than this woman to her child.

So the humble admission in this ayah is not defeat. It is relief. Someone watches better than you can, and loves more than you do.

The arrogance we might fear in a being who calls Himself best is the very opposite here. It is our pride that claims to guard what only He can.

Yaqub's dignity grows in this moment, not shrinks. He stops pretending.
