At-Tariq 86:4
إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ
“There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.”
Saheeh International
Essence
There is no self anywhere without someone over it keeping watch: your breath kept, your deeds kept, and nothing about you left untended.
A reflection
You are kept, not self-running
This is what the stars were sworn by: in kullu nafsin lammā ʿalayhā ḥāfiẓ. There is no soul but that over it is a keeper. The sentence is built as a denial with an exception. The reading with a doubled m makes it sharper still: not a single self is left out. Nafs is the self, and one classical view links it to nafas, breath. A soul is a breath lent to you.
Who is the keeper? Most early voices say angels. Some say Allah Himself. One classical commentary settles it gently: the angels and the mind are only means, and the true keeper is Allah. It quotes two ayat. Allah is the best keeper (12:64). Who guards you by night and by day from the Most Merciful (21:42)? Another commentary widens the lens further. Everything other than Allah exists only because He keeps it in being, as He holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease (35:41). This ayah applies that to you in particular.
Now think of the ego's favourite story: I keep myself going. At a leaving do, a man announces that he has not taken a sick day in twenty-two years. The room claps. He means it as a boast about discipline, and discipline is real. But he did not run the defences that fought off a thousand colds he never noticed. He did not keep his own heart beating through twenty-two years of nights. He was kept.
That is no insult to effort. It is simply the order of things. You work; He keeps. You lock the door; He guards the house. When the ego forgets that order, it takes the credit for a watch it never kept.
Is it arrogant for God to declare that every soul depends on Him? Mūsā answered that long ago. If you and everyone on earth were ungrateful, Allah would still be free of need and worthy of praise (14:8). The statement is not His need to be acknowledged. It is our need to know where we stand. And there is rest in it. You are not the only thing holding your life together.
