Al-Kahf · Makki · ayah 27 of 110

Al-Kahf 18:27

وَٱتْلُ مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْكَ مِن كِتَابِ رَبِّكَ ۖ لَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَلَن تَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلْتَحَدًا

“And recite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words, and never will you find in other than Him a refuge.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The verb for reciting means a weaned kid trotting behind its mother, and the word for refuge is the niche cut in a grave wall.

A reflection

The gold stays and the seal is gone

The word for changing is sharper than any translation shows, and one lexicon preserves a grammarian's precise picture of it.

There are two verbs. One means taking a thing off and putting another on, as you would swap a signet ring for a plain band. The other, the one used in this ayah, means melting the signet down and recasting it as a plain ring. The gold remains. The seal is gone.

So the claim is not merely that nobody can replace His words with different ones. It is that nobody can keep the material and remove the authority.

That second thing is what actually happens to texts, and it is what pride does for a living. We do not usually contradict what we have read. We recast it. The words are still there, the quotation is accurate, and the thing that made it a command has been melted out. A man can carry a whole Book in his memory with every seal taken off it.

In a melting pot a stolen chalice becomes a button of silver in four minutes. The weight on the scales is identical. The receiver pays the same money for it. Nothing has been destroyed, and the chalice is not anywhere.

And the next clause is why it matters, because it leaves no second office to appeal to.

You will not find, besides Him, anywhere to lean.
