Al-Kahf · Makki · ayah 26 of 110
Al-Kahf 18:26
“Say, "Allāh is most knowing of how long they remained. He has [knowledge of] the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. How Seeing is He and how Hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and He shares not His legislation with anyone."”

Essence
The word for the unseen means the sun after it has set: still there, still shining, hidden only from your eyes.
A reflection
The unseen is not a vacancy
The word we translate as the unseen has a scene in it, and the scene changes everything.
The lexicons give the root as something screened from the eyes, and their first example is the sun. The Arabs said it: the sun has set, hidden but not gone. Then a hollow in the ground that hides a traveller. A thicket, because whatever is in it is hidden. The dark bottom of a well, which is where Yusuf was thrown. Roots buried in the earth. Even the fat inside a sheep.
So the unseen is not an absence. It is a full room with the door shut.
And this ayah says the whole of it, in the heavens and in the earth, belongs to Him.
We do not read it that way. We treat the unseen as a vacancy, and the ego fills vacancies with itself. What happens after death, what is coming next year, what that person really thinks: we experience these as blanks, and a blank invites an opinion. The pride in it is almost invisible, because it feels like thinking rather than claiming.
The stars do not go out at breakfast. They are up there all morning, over the school run and the traffic. The only thing that changed is what is in front of them.
That is the ayah's picture of everything you cannot see. Not empty. Occupied, and owned.
