Al-Kahf 18:31

“Those will have gardens of perpetual residence; beneath them rivers will flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine silk and brocade, reclining therein on adorned couches. Excellent is the reward, and good is the resting place.”

Essence

The reward is listed item by item, and one item lands on the exact patch of forearm you rinse before every prayer.

A reflection

They are adorned; they do not adorn themselves

A gilder lays gold leaf on a carved frame. The wood did nothing to earn the gold. It could not have applied it either, not a single leaf, since the leaf is thinner than a breath and tears at a dry touch. The frame will be beautiful, and the beauty will have been done to it.

One of the long commentaries notices a shift in the grammar of this verse that most of us read straight past. For the jewellery the verb is passive. They are adorned. For the clothing it is active. They wear. Why the difference, it asks, and offers an answer. Perhaps the wearing points to what they came to deserve through their own work. Perhaps the adorning points to what He bestowed from the beginning, out of surplus generosity, with nothing on their side to account for it.

Sit with how that lands on the ego.

We are at our proudest about the parts of our lives we assembled. The career built, the house paid off, the reputation earned. And we are quietly embarrassed by the parts we were handed. The family we were born into. The health we did not organise. The mind we were issued with. The vanity is in preferring the first list, as though having assembled something makes it worth more than having been given it.

This verse quietly reverses the order. The clothing, which is the earned half, is described in ordinary terms. The gold, which is the gift, is where the sentence puts the hand of Another. Nothing about you is more impressive than the fact that He chose to decorate it.
