Al-Kahf 18:9

أَمْ حَسِبْتَ أَنَّ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْكَهْفِ وَٱلرَّقِيمِ كَانُوا۟ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا عَجَبًا

“Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?[781]”

Essence

The famous story opens with a question that takes the marvel out of it before a single detail is given.

A reflection

Wonder is a confession of not knowing

One lexicon defines the word for wonder with unusual precision. It is the state that comes over a person who does not know a thing's cause. And it draws the conclusion itself: wonder cannot be ascribed to Allah, who knows everything hidden.

So the question in this ayah is not asking whether the story is impressive. It is asking whose ignorance is being measured.

The same root gives another word, and the pairing is not an accident. It also gives self-admiration. Being struck by a marvel and being impressed with yourself grow from the same letters. Both are a response to a surface you have not seen behind.

Watch two hundred people in a lay-by on a wet Tuesday. Telescopes on a hedge, everybody waiting on a small brown bird. It was blown off its route across an ocean and is now in the wrong county. It is a genuine rarity and they are not wrong to come. Meanwhile, above the hedge, swifts are crossing on a journey that began in another continent. Nobody turns their head, because the swifts come every year.

That is how vanity works. It attaches to the unusual, because the unusual can be collected and spoken about afterwards. The standing wonders cannot be collected, so they become background.

The ayah does not say the cave was unremarkable. It says: among Our signs. Set it where it belongs, and notice what you have been walking past.
