Maryam 19:80

وَنَرِثُهُۥ مَا يَقُولُ وَيَأْتِينَا فَرْدًا

“And We will inherit him [in] what he mentions,[826] and he will come to Us alone.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The wealth and children he boasted of pass to their true Heir, and the man who expected everything to come to him comes alone.

A reflection

The Heir of everything he boasted of

We will inherit from him what he speaks of. The verb is the verb of inheritance, and the One inheriting is Allah.

A linguistic commentary spells out the picture. At his death, We take it from him the way an heir takes what he inherits. A theological commentary adds the cruel precision of the image. An inheritance never goes back to the one who left it. Whatever passes at death does not return to the dead man's hand.

The surah has already said this on a larger scale. It is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned (19:40). Every owner on earth is, in the end, someone whose estate passes on. Only one Heir outlasts every owner.

That is where the ego meets its limit. Al-ʿĀṣ spoke of wealth and children as though they were permanent features of himself. He swore that they would follow him into the next life. The ayah does not deny he had them. It says they were never his to carry across. They will be inherited from him, by the One who gave them.

An obvious doubt arises. Why would God want to inherit anything? He needs nothing. The answer lies in what inheritance means here. It is not acquisition. It is what is left when everyone else has gone. The lexicons define the root as a thing passing from one people to others. Allah is called the Heir because He is the One who remains, not because He gains.

Pride rests on ownership. This ayah reclassifies every possession as a loan, waiting for its true Heir.
