Al-Anbya 21:33

“And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.”

Saheeh International

Essence

He made night and day, the sun and the moon, and each glides through its own round course like a swimmer.

A reflection

We set the clocks; He made the day

The previous ayat spoke in the voice of majesty: "We made", "We placed". This one turns: wa huwa alladhī khalaqa, and He it is who created. One classical commentator notes the shift of voice and says it sharpens attention to what follows. The night, the day, the sun, the moon: these are among the very signs people were said, a moment ago, to turn away from.

A narration-based commentary explains why they are named. Allah created night and day for you, it says, as a blessing, a proof and a sign of His great authority. They alternate for the good of your livelihood, your worldly affairs and your next life. Concise modern commentaries add the purpose of each. The night is for rest. The day is for seeking a living.

Picture a man on a Saturday night in late October, going round the house putting the clocks back an hour. The oven, the car, the microwave, the old clock in the hall. He jokes to his daughter that he has just given everyone an extra hour of sleep. She laughs. But the sun will rise tomorrow exactly when it would have risen anyway. He has changed the numbers on the walls. He has not moved the morning by a second.

We organise our lives with remarkable precision: calendars, alarms, time zones, shift patterns. It is easy to start feeling that we manage time. The ayah gently corrects that pride. We measure the day. He made it.

A sceptic may ask why the Quran insists on telling us who made the sun, as if seeking credit. The commentaries read it the other way round. The night and day are described as blessings for us and proofs for us. He gains nothing from our noticing. We gain everything: rest at night, work by day, and a reason to look up and know whom to thank.
