Yusuf 12:4

“[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father,[584] "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me."”

Essence

The best of stories begins with a boy waking in the night and carrying the whole sky to one person: his father.

A reflection

This is not a story about following your dream

The version most of us carry is simple and stirring. Yusuf was a dreamer. He dreamed of greatness, held on to it through everything, and it came true. Believe in your dream and the people who doubted you will one day bow.

A careers-day speaker in a school hall tells four hundred fifteen-year-olds exactly that. Be like Joseph, he says. Dream big, and do not let your brothers stop you. It lands well. Nobody in the hall has read the surah.

The words say something else. Yusuf did not dream of greatness in the sense of wanting it. He saw something in his sleep that he had not asked for. One of the Companions is reported as saying that the dreams of prophets are revelation. This was a sign placed in a boy, not an aim he set himself.

He did not announce it, either. He did not tell it to his brothers or to the camp. He took it to one person, his father, and the next ayah shows he was told to keep it close.

And when it came true, decades later, it did not look like revenge. He raised his parents onto the seat of honour beside him. He said: this is the meaning of my dream from before; my Lord has made it true (12:100). He spoke of his Lord's gentleness, not of his own persistence.

So the shape is not ambition rewarded. It is a gift held quietly, through a well, a sale and a prison, and fulfilled by the One who gave it. That is less flattering to us, and far more comforting. Your worth does not depend on how hard you dream. It depends on what He has decreed, and He does not forget.
