Al-Anbya 21:8

وَمَا جَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ جَسَدًا لَّا يَأْكُلُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ خَـٰلِدِينَ

“And We did not make them [i.e., the prophets] forms not eating food,[873] nor were they immortal [on earth].”

Essence

The prophets had bodies that needed bread and lives that ended; what made them messengers was never that they were more than human.

A reflection

Bodies that needed bread

The Makkans had a specific complaint, and the Quran records it elsewhere. What sort of messenger is this, who eats food and walks in the markets? (25:7). This ayah answers it head on. We did not make them bodies that did not eat food. Every messenger before had a stomach that grumbled and a body that tired.

A commentator spells it out. The messengers ate and drank like other people. They went into the markets to earn a living and to trade. None of that harmed them or took anything from their standing, as the idolaters imagined it would.

The Prophet's ﷺ own household knew hunger closely. ʿAʾisha described months in which no fire was lit in their homes for cooking. They lived on dates and water, she said, unless someone brought them a little meat. Bukhari records it. The man whose words were reshaping Arabia went to bed, many nights, having eaten very little.

Picture a boy of nine in a supermarket with his mother. In the queue ahead of them stands the imam from the mosque, the man who leads the Friday prayer in his white robe. Today he wears a fleece and carries a basket of onions, a bag of rice and a bottle of washing-up liquid. The boy stares. He had somehow assumed the imam did not need onions.

That is the instinct the Makkans had, grown into an argument. Holiness, they assumed, must look like distance from ordinary needs. The ayah corrects it gently. Ordinary needs are not a stain on the messenger. They are what make him reachable. A messenger who never ate could tell you nothing about gratitude for bread, or about fasting, or about patience on an empty stomach. The prophets could, because they knew.
