Ali 'Imran 3:144

“Muḥammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allāh at all; but Allāh will reward the grateful.”

Essence

Muhammad is only a messenger, and messengers have gone before him; if he dies, whoever turns back harms nobody but himself.

A reflection

Allah is living and does not die

A town's local-history society ran for thirty years on one woman's card index. She kept it at home and would not let anyone copy it. She died in March. By the autumn nobody could answer a single enquiry.

Everything built on a single living point goes when the point goes. The ayah is about the one exception.

And whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah in anything. One early commentator unpacks that clause carefully. It will not weaken Allah's might, nor His authority, and no deficiency will enter His dominion by it. Another says simply that harm and benefit are not possible for Him at all.

So picture what is being said, and to whom.

A community has just been routed. Many of them believe the Prophet is dead. Some are sitting down with their weapons on the ground. And the sentence that arrives tells them that if the whole lot of them walked away, nothing would be reduced.

Sahih al-Bukhari records the day the implication was tested in earnest. When the Prophet died, Abu Bakr came in from his house, went to him, uncovered his face, kissed him and wept. Then he came out to the people, and Umar was standing and speaking. Abu Bakr said: whoever among you was worshipping Muhammad, Muhammad has died. And whoever was worshipping Allah, Allah is living and does not die. Then he recited this ayah to its end. The narration adds: by Allah, it was as if the people did not know Allah had sent it down until Abu Bakr recited it. Then every one of them took it from him.

Now the part that empties the ego out.

Most of our sense of significance rests on being needed. The quiet pleasure of being the one who holds the index. The private calculation that if we withdrew, something would suffer. That is the architecture of self-importance, and it is held up by our contribution being load-bearing somewhere.

This clause removes the possibility at the top of the chain. Your leaving would not cost Him anything. Not your faith, not your prayer, not your work.

And a fair question comes straight back. If He loses nothing, why does He command anything, and why speak to us at all? Look at the direction of the sentence. The One who cannot be harmed is the One who stays and speaks to the men who have just run. He tells them where they are standing.

Pride needs to be needed. He needs nothing, and He came anyway.

So find the place where you have quietly made yourself load-bearing, and let someone else learn it. Copy the index out.
