Al-Anbya · Makki · ayah 80 of 112
Al-Anbya 21:80
“And We taught him the fashioning of coats of armor to protect you from your [enemy in] battle. So will you then be grateful?”
Saheeh International
Essence
The first ring-mail was a lesson from Allah to a prophet, for you; and the question at the end is whether you have noticed.
A reflection
"We taught him": every skill has a Teacher
Wa ʿallamnāhu ṣanʿata labūsin lakum: and We taught him the making of armour for you. The commentators explain what changed. Before Dawud, one early authority says, armour was made of plates. He was the first to link it from rings. The result, another adds, joined lightness with protection.
So the ayah credits one of the great technical advances of the ancient world to a single verb: We taught him. Not "he invented". Not "he discovered". The root of ṣanʿa means doing a thing well, with skill; one lexicon says it is never used of animals or lifeless things. Skill is a human glory. And the ayah says, quietly, that even this was taught.
Picture a dinner held to honour the engineer who designed a protective vest. A year ago it stopped a blade aimed at a young police officer, who is at the dinner with her parents. The engineer is asked to say a few words. Everyone expects a speech about years of testing and late nights. He stands, looks at the officer, and says only: "I was shown it. I just paid attention." Then he sits down.
That is the humility the ayah asks for, and it is hard. Our ego loves to say "I built this", "I worked this out", "my idea". The truth the ayah offers is gentler and larger. Whatever you know how to make, someone taught you, and behind every teacher is the One who taught Dawud.
Then the ayah asks a question: fa-hal antum shākirūn, so are you grateful? Does Allah need our thanks for armour He taught? No. One commentator explains the question as a command phrased gently, implying we have fallen short. The thanks is for us. The person who knows their skill was taught holds it humbly and uses it well.
