Al-Anbya 21:84

“So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers [of Allāh].”

Essence

One short prayer after years of pain, and the answer came in three verbs: heard, lifted, given back with more besides.

A reflection

"I can never do without Your blessing"

Look at the speed of the answer. Fa-stajabnā lahu fa-kashafnā: so We answered him, so We lifted. Each "so" falls straight after the last. Years of illness, one short du'a, and three verbs of Allah in a row: answered, lifted, gave.

Ayyub contributed nothing to the cure except his call. He had no wealth left to spend on remedies. No friends left to help him. The rescue was all Allah's.

Sahih al-Bukhari records what happened afterwards. The Prophet ﷺ said that while Ayyub was bathing, locusts of gold began to fall on him, and he started gathering them into his garment. His Lord called him: Ayyub, have I not made you free of need of what you see? He said: yes, by Your might, but I can never be free of need of Your blessing.

Picture a woman two years into remission from cancer. She is fit, busy and in demand as a speaker. Her talk is called "How I Beat It": the diet, the mindset, the refusal to give up. It is inspiring, and much of it is true. One evening, alone in a hotel room after a talk, she realises she has not mentioned Allah once in two years of speeches. The doctors, the drugs and her own strength were all real. They were also all given.

That is where the ego returns after a rescue. In the pit we know we are helpless. Once we are out, we rewrite the story with ourselves at the centre. Ayyub, healed and showered with gold, did the opposite. He reached for more blessing, because he knew where it came from.

Does Allah need us to credit Him? No. He is free of need. But the heart that credits Him stays connected to the source. The heart that credits itself is already drifting from it.
