Al-Anbya 21:92

إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦٓ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةً وَٰحِدَةً وَأَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمْ فَٱعْبُدُونِ

“Indeed this, your religion, is one religion,[903] and I am your Lord, so worship Me.”

Essence

After a long roll of prophets, Allah gathers them into one way and speaks in His own voice: I am your Lord, so worship Me.

A reflection

After all the names, one 'I'

For more than forty ayat this surah has walked through great lives. Ibrahim smashing idols and walking out of a fire. Nuh answered from the flood. Sulayman with the wind at his command. Ayyub restored after long illness. Yunus heard from inside darkness. Zakariyya given a son in old age. Maryam and her son made one sign.

Then the camera swings round. 'This way of yours is one way, and I am your Lord.' Every story in the gallery closes into a single first-person pronoun.

Notice what that does to the greatest names a human being could carry. Not one of them is the destination. Each was great as a servant, and each story ends by pointing to the One they served. The commentators read the ayah as if the prophets were standing in a line together. All of them, they say, were gathered on one thing: that He alone is worshipped.

The ego works the other way. It collects stories in order to place itself at the end of them. Picture a man giving a speech at his father's eightieth birthday. Within three minutes it has become a speech about himself: his career, his sacrifices, what he learned. The family smiles politely. Everybody notices.

The Quran does the opposite. It tells story after story of extraordinary people, and then steps every one of them aside. Not to belittle them, but to put them where they asked to be put.

Does a Lord who says 'worship Me' need the worship? The word fa, 'so', answers that. It does not say 'because I need it'. It says 'because I am your Lord'. The command follows a fact, as night follows sunset. Elsewhere He says plainly that He wants no provision from anyone (51:57). The worship is the right response to what is true. Nothing is added to Him by it.
