Al-Mu'minun 23:43

مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ

“No nation will precede its time [of termination], nor will they remain [thereafter].”

Saheeh International

Essence

No people can outrun its appointed time, and none can hold it back: every term falls due exactly when Allah set it.

A reflection

A race no people can win

A businessman runs onto the platform as the departure board clicks over. He has phoned ahead; he is an important customer. The doors close. The train leaves at 18:04, exactly as printed, and he is left holding his phone.

The ayah uses a racing word. Mā tasbiqu: no people outruns. The lexicons say the root's home was the horse race. Riders set off together, and the winner took the stake laid between them. That image is established. And the thing no people can outrun is its ajal. The lexicons give that word the picture of a time's far limit. It is the day a debt falls due, a waiting period ends, a life runs out. That image is established too.

So picture every nation in history lined up in a race against its own due date. Not one has ever crossed the line early. Not one has held it back. One commentator adds that not even by an hour, citing a sister ayah (7:34).

A classical theologian draws the deeper point. Every people has terms written for its life and its death, which neither come early nor late. This shows, he says, that Allah knows things before they exist, so that they happen only in accordance with His knowledge.

This is not a tyrant flaunting control. A tyrant keeps people guessing to keep them afraid. Allah tells us plainly that the term exists, so that we can prepare for it.

This is the end of a particular kind of pride: the belief that power buys time. Empires, dynasties, companies and families have all tried. Wealth can buy comfort, influence, even good medicine. It cannot buy one minute past the term.

The humble response is to stop racing the clock and start using it. If the term is fixed, what is still open is what we do before it.

Today, ask yourself what you would do differently if you knew your term were already written. It is.
