Al-Mu'minun 23:42
ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ قُرُونًا ءَاخَرِينَ
“Then We produced after them other generations.”

Essence
The story speeds up: after two peoples told in detail, whole generations pass in a single line, each handed the earth in turn.
A reflection
Centuries in one line
A documentary about an old city reaches its last minute. The narrator goes quiet, and four centuries pass in ninety seconds of fading photographs. Markets, wars, weddings, a plague, a new bridge. Each face on screen once thought it was the centre of the story.
The ayah does something similar. For nearly twenty ayat, the surah has told the stories of Nuh and of the people after him in close detail. Now whole generations pass in a single line. Then We raised up after them other generations. One classical theologian notes the shift. The Quran sometimes tells its stories in full detail, and sometimes in summary, as here.
The commentators try to name these generations. Several suggest the peoples of Salih, Lut and Shuʿayb. Two concise commentaries add the people of Ayyub and Yunus. One companion of the Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said it means the Children of Israel. The ayah itself names none of them.
That compression is humbling. Every one of those peoples had its kings, its chiefs, its feuds, its proud families. Each lived as if it were the whole story. In Allah's telling, they share one line.
The ego resists this. We want our generation, our nation, our family to be the main plot. The ayah gently shows the scale. Before the One who raises and replaces peoples, an age is a sentence.
Yet being one line in history is not the same as being lost in a crowd before Allah. Each of them will come to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone (19:95). That is not meant to crush us. It is meant to set us free from taking our own importance too seriously. What matters is not how large our line in history is, but whether it was written in obedience.
Ask tonight: if my whole life were one line in Allah's telling, what would I want that line to say?
