Al-Mu'minun 23:52

وَإِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦٓ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةً وَٰحِدَةً وَأَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمْ فَٱتَّقُونِ

“And indeed this, your religion, is one religion,[959] and I am your Lord, so fear Me."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every messenger brought one religion from one Lord, so the shield of taqwa is owed to Him alone.

A reflection

No second Lord to appeal to

A tenant pays rent for years to a man who claims to own the flat. Then a letter arrives from the land registry with a different name on it. Everything she thought she owed is suddenly owed somewhere else.

Wa-anā rabbukum: and I am your Lord. One modern commentary glosses it: you have no Lord other than Me. Another commentator adds: with no partner in lordship. The sentence ends every other claim on you.

That humbles the ego twice. It removes the false lords people quietly serve: career, reputation, the opinion of the crowd. And it removes the self as lord, the voice that says my preferences decide what is right.

Allah needs nothing from this declaration. It does not add to Him. It tells you who actually holds the deed, so your obedience stops being paid to the wrong address.
