Al-Furqan 25:24

أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَيْرٌ مُّسْتَقَرًّا وَأَحْسَنُ مَقِيلًا

“The companions of Paradise, that Day, are [in] a better settlement and better resting place.”

Saheeh International

Essence

On the Day that scatters other deeds like dust, the people of the Garden settle, and rest as one rests at noon after heat.

A reflection

Dust that never settles, and people who do

Read this ayah straight after the one before it, as it was revealed, and a contrast appears. The previous ayah ended on manthūr: dust scattered in the air, never coming to rest. This one turns to people who have a mustaqarr, a place to settle.

The word yawmaʾidhin, on that Day, binds the two together. It is the same Day. One commentary spells it out: the day their deeds were made dust, and the angels brought no good news. In the very hours when one group's work is flying apart, another group settles.

One classical commentator names the purpose of the turn. Having shown the deniers' total loss, the surah describes the people of the Garden. It is a reminder, he says, that the whole of good fortune lies in obeying Allah.

The pairing works on the reader before any argument does. Dust is the thing that cannot stay. It drifts, lands, is lifted again, and belongs nowhere. A settled place is its opposite. It is where you put down what you carry and stop being moved.

Picture the two images side by side, as a child might draw them. On one side, a cloud of specks with nothing beneath it. On the other, a figure sitting down in shade at midday. The Quran draws them on one page, a breath apart.

The ayah does not explain here how these people came to settle. The surah does that later, in its portrait of the servants of the Merciful: walking gently, praying by night, patient (25:63-75). Here it shows only the result. Their deeds were not dust, so they had something to stand on.

The contrast leaves a question for every reader. What in my life is scattering, and what is settling? Deeds addressed to Allah are the ones that land, and stay where they land.
