Ash-Shu'ara 26:189

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

“And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.”

Saheeh International

Essence

They kept on denying, and the day of the canopy took them: a people of shady thickets undone beneath an overhanging cloud.

A reflection

The answer came from the direction they pointed

Two ayat earlier, the people of the thicket made a request. "Bring down pieces of the sky upon us, if you are truthful" (26:187). They pointed upward and laughed.

What took them came from above: a canopy, an overhanging cloud. One commentator draws the line plainly. The punishment was of the very kind they had asked for, a recompense that fitted.

He then notices something across the whole Quran. The ruin of Shuʿayb's people is told in three places, and each telling names a different face of it. In Al-Aʿraf it is the shaking (7:91), because they had shaken the believers with threats of expulsion (7:88). In Hud it is the cry that silenced them (11:94), because they had mocked him with sarcastic words (11:87). Here it is the canopy, because here they had dared the sky to fall.

This is how justice looks when the Just describes it. The sentence answers the crime point by point. Nothing in it is random or excessive. Each surah lifts out the part of the ending that rhymes with the sin it has just shown.

There is a sobering lesson for us. Our challenges to Allah are not lost in the air. What we mock, dare or dismiss is often the very shape our lesson takes. It is far better to be taught by His words now than by their fulfilment later.
