Ash-Shu'ara 26:85

وَٱجْعَلْنِى مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

“And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Having asked for a good name on earth, Ibrahim asks for what no name can secure: a place among the Garden's heirs.

A reflection

An heir, not an employee

Ibrahim does not ask to be paid with the Garden. He asks to be among its waratha, its heirs.

The lexicons describe the root simply. Something that belonged to one passes to another, by kinship or some other cause. The Arabs stretched the word. Rain was said to awratha the plants their bloom, and an illness to awratha weakness. Inheritance, in this language, is what comes to you because of a relation or a cause, not because you invoiced for it.

That picture unsettles a common way of thinking. Many of us imagine Paradise as a wage. So many prayers, so many fasts, so much charity; the total buys a place. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record the Prophet ﷺ correcting that directly. No one's deeds will bring him into the Garden. They asked whether that included him. It did, he said, unless Allah covered him with grace and mercy.

A later commentator notes that some drew the same lesson from this very prayer. If good deeds made the Garden owed, why would Ibrahim, after asking for righteousness, still ask for the Garden? The commentator thinks other proofs are stronger. But the point stands in the hadith itself.

Deeds still matter. 'This is the Garden you have been made to inherit for what you used to do' (43:72). Deeds are the road. Mercy is the reason the road arrives anywhere.

Picture a woman called to a solicitor's office after her great-aunt's death. She learns she has been left the house. She is stunned. All she did was visit on Sundays, bring soup when the old woman was ill, and listen to the same stories. None of that was payment. But it was the relationship that made her the heir.

That is close to what Ibrahim asks for. Not a wage for a career of service. A place in the family of those to whom the Garden passes, because they belonged to its Owner as servants.
