Al-Qasas 28:49
“Say, "Then bring a scripture from Allāh which is more guiding than either of them that I may follow it, if you should be truthful."”

Essence
Answering the charge of magic, the Prophet makes an open offer: bring a book from Allah that guides better, and he will follow it.
A reflection
Show me a better plan and I will follow it
After a run of accusations, the Prophet is told to answer with an offer. Bring a book from Allah that guides better than these two, and I will follow it. He does not shout down the charge of magic. He proposes a test, and stakes himself on its outcome.
A new head chef takes over a busy kitchen. One of the line cooks complains about the menu every night, to anyone who will listen. At the end of a long service, the chef hands him a pad and a pen. Write me a better menu, she says, and if it is better, we will serve it. The complaints stop. He has not been silenced. The conversation has simply moved from grumbling to the actual question.
This is a confident form of leadership. It does not need to win every exchange by force. It reopens the real question, and invites the critic to do the work of answering it. The offer is sincere: I will follow it. A leader who says this must be ready to mean it. The Prophet could say it because he knew where his book came from.
Does the phrase 'if you are truthful' suggest he doubted? Classical commentators on the language explain the form. It is the condition used by someone so sure of their case that they can afford to extend it generously. Some also hear a note of irony in it. Either way, it is the opposite of hesitation. It is the calm of a person whose case can bear any honest test.
In your own disputes, at home or at work, try this form before reaching for a louder argument. Ask the critic for their better alternative, and promise to take it if it is better. You will soon learn whether the complaint was about the plan, or about something else entirely.
