An-Nisa 4:82
“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’ān?[203] If it had been from [any] other than Allāh, they would have found within it much contradiction.”

Essence
The Quran does not ask for defence here; it hands you a test, and says what you would find if it were false.
A reflection
A test, not a slogan
Most people who know this ayah know it as a reply. Someone online posts that the Quran contradicts itself. Within a minute the comments section fills with the same reference: 4:82, no contradictions, look it up. The ayah has become a shield, lifted quickly and put down again.
Read slowly, it does not behave like a shield. It opens with a question about people, not about the Book: do they not ponder? Only then does it state a condition. Had it come from anyone other than Allah, they would have found much difference in it. The sentence does not say, trust Us, there is nothing to find. It says, go and look, and it tells you what looking would have turned up.
That is a remarkable thing for a scripture to do. It sets out the terms of its own failure. It names the kind of evidence that would count against it, and invites the search.
Notice who was being addressed. The ayah before describes people who said 'obedience' to the Prophet's ﷺ face and planned something else by night. These were not believers needing reassurance. They were sceptics inside the camp, and the Book's answer to them was not a threat. It was a method.
The verb carries the same invitation. Wajada is the word the Arabs used for finding a stray camel after a search. They would have found it: the reader is cast as the one who goes looking.
So the worn-smooth reading has things the wrong way round. This is not mainly a claim for Muslims to defend. It is an instruction for anyone to carry out, the believer included. Picture a very long scroll handed to you with a lamp, and the words: find the slip. Quoting the ayah without ever holding the scroll up to the light uses the conclusion and skips the experiment.
