Al-Qasas · Makki · ayah 72 of 88
Al-Qasas 28:72
“Say, "Have you considered: if Allāh should make for you the day continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allāh could bring you a night in which you may rest? Then will you not see?"”
Saheeh International
Essence
Were the day never to end, no one but Allah could bring you a night to rest in; even your stillness is His gift.
A reflection
No one can switch off the sun
In the far north in high summer, a fishing crew works under a sun that never sets. It circles the horizon all night, low and orange. By the second week the cook tapes kitchen foil over the cabin portholes. The men lie in their bunks in a darkness made of tinfoil. Their bodies still will not believe it is night.
This ayah asks the listener to stretch that fortnight to the end of time. Have you considered, if Allah made the day endless over you until the Day of Resurrection? One classical commentator pictures the sun simply held still in the middle of the sky. Then comes the question nobody can dodge. Which god other than Allah could bring you a night?
Notice what the question does to human pride. We can floodlight a stadium at midnight. We can cross six time zones in an afternoon. But no engineer, no government and no fortune can switch off the sun for a single evening. Every blackout blind is a borrowed scrap of the night He sends. The foil on the porthole is an admission.
The ego likes to think of rest as something it schedules. This ayah says rest is something you are given. Your sleep tonight depends on a darkness you did not order and could never manufacture.
Why does Allah press the point? Not because He needs the admission. He is not made greater by our saying it, nor smaller by our silence. The question is for the listener. The people of Makkah already agreed that Allah ran the heavens. They simply kept other names beside His. The ayah walks them to a door they cannot open, and lets them notice that the only key is in His hand. Humility here is not a mood. It is simply accuracy about who brings the night.
