Ar-Ra'd 13:28

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allāh. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allāh hearts are assured."”

Essence

Hearts were made with one resting place, and this ayah names it twice: once for the believers, and once for every heart.

A reflection

Not a breathing exercise

This may be the most quoted ayah on anxiety. It is printed on mugs and posters and sent to friends before exams. The reading that travels with it is simple: say the words of remembrance and you will feel calm. Dhikr as a technique, like slow breathing.

There is truth in that, and it is not the whole truth. Read the ayah where it stands. Just before it, the deniers ask why no sign has been sent down to the Prophet ﷺ (13:27). They want a marvel. The reply is that Allah leaves astray whom He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns back. Then come the guided: those who believe, and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah.

Several early authorities say that 'the remembrance of Allah' here is the Quran itself. A classical spiritual writer calls this the preferred view. A heart, he argues, only settles through certainty, and certainty comes from the Book. So the ayah draws a pointed contrast. Some people demand a spectacle and stay restless. Others already hold the greatest sign, and rest in it.

That changes what 'rest' means. It is not a mood laid over a problem. It is the stillness of a mind that has stopped doubting where it stands.

Think of an office worker who plays rain sounds through her earbuds to get through the afternoon. Another evening she plays a recording of dhikr the same way. Both help. Both stop helping when the track ends. The ayah describes something sturdier: a traveller who reaches the one camp where he unloads for good.

The remembrance of the tongue is not excluded; other commentators read the words plainly that way. But tongue and Book belong together. The rest promised is for a heart that knows what it is remembering.
