Saba 34:7

“But those who disbelieve say, "Shall we direct you to a man who will inform you [that] when you have disintegrated in complete disintegration, you will [then] be [recreated] in a new creation?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The deniers make the resurrection a joke: shall we show you a man who says that, torn to shreds, you will be made new?

A reflection

Made new, and still you?

The gathering of scattered dust has its answer two ayat earlier, in Allah's knowledge of every atom (34:3). But the deniers' sentence holds a second, quieter objection. They say a new creation. If I am made new, is it still me? Or is it a copy wearing my name?

Notice that the deniers chose the word new to make the idea sound absurd. Yet the commentators read the same words with a different weight. You will return as you were before death, one early explanation says. You come back alive, says another. New describes the making. It does not describe a different person.

Picture a cellist whose instrument cracked badly in a cold winter. A luthier works on it for months. The top is replaced and the neck is new. Much of the wood she bowed against for twenty years is gone. When she plays it again, she does not say, this is a different cello. She says, my cello is back. What makes it hers is not each splinter. It is the instrument's continuing identity, known to her and to its maker.

The comparison limps, as all comparisons do. A luthier rebuilds from guesswork; Allah returns His creation as He began it, knowing it entirely. Elsewhere the Quran answers the same doubt directly. He who produced them the first time will give them life (36:79).

What remains open is the exact how. The Quran does not describe the mechanism, and honesty means not inventing one. What it settles is the important part. The one raised is the one who lived. That is precisely why the deniers found it frightening: the person returned is the person who will be asked.
