“When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allāh?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Ilyas opens with a question, not a command: will you not put a shield between yourselves and what is coming?

A reflection

A shield, not a shiver

Tattaqūn comes from taqwā, a word often translated as fear. The root picture is different, and it is established. W-q-y means pushing harm away from a thing by putting something between them. A wiqāya is whatever does that: a shield, a covering, a guard. A good saddle was wāq when it did not rub the camel's back raw. A horse with a sore hoof stepped carefully on hard ground, guarding its foot. The lexicons explain ittaqi Allāh as placing a shield between yourself and what you fear from Him.

So Ilyas is not asking why are you not trembling? He is asking will you not protect yourselves? A narration-based commentary spells out what from: fear Allah and beware His punishment for worshipping a lord other than Him. A concise modern commentary names the shield itself. It is obeying His commands, first among them His oneness, and avoiding what He forbids, worst among them associating others with Him.

Picture a roofer on a wet morning. Before he steps onto the slate, he clips his harness to the line along the ridge. He is not panicking. He has done this job for twenty years. He is simply careful, because he knows what a fall from that height does. The harness does not stop him working. It lets him work without dying.

That is taqwā as the root pictures it. Not a life of paralysing fear, but a life with a harness clipped on. It allows a person to walk high places, to take on responsibility and risk, while staying tied to the One who holds the line.

Ilyas's people had unclipped. They had set up Baal and left their Lord. His first words to them were not an accusation. They were a reminder: you are walking on wet slate. Where is your harness?
