As-Saffat 37:129

وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

“And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:”

Saheeh International

Essence

His own people called Ilyas a liar; Allah left his name honoured among the peoples who came after, and we are among them.

A reflection

Forgotten at home, remembered everywhere

Two ayat ago, Ilyas's people denied him. Now Allah says what He left upon him among later generations. A concise modern commentary spells it out: We made for Ilyas a beautiful praise among the nations after him. A narration-based commentary says the same: We kept a good name for him among the later peoples.

Notice the reversal. The town that rejected him is not named. Its idol survives only as a word of rebuke in the Quran. Its king, its priests and its crowds have vanished into a handful of uncertain reports. But the man they called a liar is greeted with peace, by name, wherever this surah is recited.

That is a quiet kind of justice. It does not arrive in Ilyas's lifetime, at least not in the visible way. It arrives in the memory of the generations, which Allah keeps. Those who mock a truthful person often assume they control the story. They do not. The last word on a name belongs to its Owner.

If you have been dismissed by people who should have listened, take heart from the order of these ayat. They denied him came first. We left upon him came after, and it lasts.
