إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

Essence
Even among a people who denied their prophet, some had been made pure by Allah, and they were not brought with the rest.
A reflection
The few inside the many
This line appears several times in As-Saffat. Here, after Ilyas's people, it carries a particular weight: the exception comes from inside the same people. A linguistic commentary reads it as a connected exception from they denied him. That shows some of his own people were sincere and did not deny him. A theological commentary agrees that not all of them denied him, since some had held to pure faith. A concise modern commentary puts it simply: except those of his people who were believers, sincere to Allah.
So while the town bowed to Baal, a few did not. They lived on the same streets and probably attended the same weddings. They simply would not call on the idol.
Picture a teenager in a friendship group where every weekend ends at a party. He goes, he laughs, he is liked. But before midnight he slips out quietly to pray. Nobody comments; most do not notice. He keeps doing it, week after week.
The Quran does not record the names of Ilyas's faithful few. It records only that Allah excepted them. That is enough. Being in the minority did not make them less safe. It made them the ones Allah singled out.
