Essence

What saved Yunus in the dark was not a single prayer but a lifelong habit: he was already one of those who glorify Allah.

A reflection

The deposit you make while the sun is out

The ayah turns on one word: lawlā, had it not been. Had it not been that he was among those who glorify, he would have stayed in that belly until the Day of Resurrection (37:144). A whole fate hangs on a habit.

Many early commentators read the habit as something built long before the fish. A narration-based commentary takes this view: he was among those who prayed to Allah before the trial. So Allah remembered him in the trial, and rescued him. Others say it was his glorification inside the belly. A linguistic commentary suggests holding both together: his glorifying in ease and in the darkness each played a part.

An early preacher's saying, preserved in the commentaries, puts it simply: remember Allah in ease and He will remember you in hardship. Al-Tirmidhi records the Prophet ﷺ teaching a young boy, 'Guard Allah, and He will guard you; guard Allah, and you will find Him before you'. Al-Tirmidhi graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.

None of this is a transaction Allah needs. He is al-ghanī, free of need (35:15). Yunus's glorifying added nothing to Allah's greatness. It built something in Yunus: a heart already turned towards Him, a tongue that knew the way when everything else went dark.

Picture a woman who has prayed the dawn prayer quietly for twenty years. No one sees it. Then one night she is on a hospital trolley in a corridor, waiting for scans, frightened. The words come to her without effort. She does not have to search for Allah. She has met Him at that hour seven thousand times.

That is the gift of worship to the worshipper. Many people today feel unmoored, reaching for meaning only when the floor gives way. Worship in ordinary days builds the floor before you need it.
