As-Saffat 37:144

لَلَبِثَ فِى بَطْنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

“He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.[1304]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Without his glorifying, the belly would have held him until the Day of Raising: the ayah shows the ending he was spared, and the rising it foreshadows.

A reflection

A small resurrection inside a surah about resurrection

As-Saffat is, from its opening pages, an argument about rising again. The deniers scoff early on. A-idhā mitnā wa-kunnā turāban wa-ʿiẓāman a-innā la-mabʿūthūn: once we are dust and bones, will we really be raised? (37:16). The surah answers them again and again.

Now, near its end, a man is enclosed in a belly and the ayah names a single horizon: yawm yubʿathūn, the day they are raised. Several commentaries say plainly what the alternative would have been. The fish's belly would have become his grave until the Day of Resurrection.

So the belly is a grave in miniature, and his coming out is a resurrection in miniature. A man placed in the dark, cut off from air and light, is brought back to the open land. The surah's great claim, that Allah brings the buried back, is acted out in one body.

The root of yubʿathūn carries an established image from desert life. Baʿatha al-baʿīr: the traveller untied the cord binding his camel's foreleg, or made it rise from kneeling, and sent it on its way. The lexicons sum the idea up as removing what held a thing back from moving. So a sleeper is roused, an army is sent out, a messenger is dispatched. And the dead are raised from where they lay, as a camel lifts itself from the ground.

Think of a hospital ward at dawn after a long operation. A patient who has been under anaesthetic for six hours opens his eyes. The nurse says his name, and he answers. For his family in the corridor, it is as if he has come back from somewhere.

The ayah does not need a lecture on the afterlife. It shows one man's rising and lets the reader draw the line to everyone's.
