As-Saffat 37:177

فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمْ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

“But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.”

Saheeh International

Essence

When it dismounts in their very courtyard, how bad the morning of those who were warned: an ordinary dawn becomes the morning of reckoning.

A reflection

The guest who dismounts in the yard

Two words in this ayah carry pictures the first hearers knew from daily life.

Nazala is to come down from a height. In the lexicons, a rider nazala when he came down from his mount and set down his baggage at a camp. He became a nazīl, a guest, and what his hosts prepared for him was his nuzul, his welcome. Sāḥa was the yard of a house: the open part with no building and no roof, and the open ground between a tribe's dwellings. In drought, the Arabs said the yards had turned to dust. A blessing was that Allah fill your yard with people. These usages are established.

Now hear the ayah again. When it comes down in their yard. The punishment arrives like a rider dismounting in the open ground where the family gathers. Not at a distance. Not in a report about somewhere else. In the yard, where the children play and the guests are welcomed.

One commentator says the force of the image is a sudden arrival: it settled its camels in their courtyard without warning.

Picture a quiet cul-de-sac at seven on a weekday morning. A family is eating breakfast. A white van pulls up and parks across their driveway. Two men in high-visibility jackets step out with a clipboard. The letters had been arriving for months, unopened in a drawer. Now the consequence is not in a letter. It is in the drive, blocking the car, visible to every neighbour.

That is what bi-sāḥatihim does. It brings the distant warning into the most familiar space. The yard that was meant to be filled with guests is filled with something no one invited.

For believers, the image is a call to treat warnings while they are still letters. It is far easier to open a drawer than to face a van in the driveway. The courtyard of your life is still open. Fill it with what you would want to see there when something finally comes down.
