As-Saffat 37:2

فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجْرًا

“And those who drive [the clouds]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Then by those who drive with a cry: angels who herd the clouds, and check what must be checked, at their Lord's command.

A reflection

The rain you did not steer

Most of the early commentators read al-zājirāt as angels who drive the clouds. One reports it from a Companion: angels put in charge of the clouds, moving them from one place to another. The cloud does not wander. It is herded.

Picture a village show at the end of a good summer. A man stands by his prize marrows, explaining his secret to anyone who will listen. The compost, the timing, the pinching out. He talks as if he had steered every shower that fell on his plot.

We all have a version of that stall. A business that grew in a good year. A child who turned out well. Exams that went smoothly. The ego quietly moves the credit to itself, as if the rain had been on our payroll.

This ayah reminds you that the clouds were driven by others, at another's command. And even those mighty drivers are not the source. They are introduced right after the rows of angels standing before their Lord. They drive only because they first stood and waited for His word.

Someone may ask: if Allah needs angels to move the clouds, is He not in need of helpers? The commentators answer that He commands, and the command is carried out. He is free of need (35:15). Giving tasks to His creatures is not a sign of weakness, any more than a king who writes laws is weakened by having heralds. It is an honour to the one entrusted.

None of this cancels your effort. The marrows still needed compost. But humility is the right posture of someone who watered and then waited. The difference between the proud gardener and the humble one is only in where the sentence ends. One ends with 'I'. The other ends with 'and then the rain came'.
