Az-Zumar 39:30

إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ

“Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Five words announce the death of the best of creation and of everyone who opposed him: no one is exempt, and no one should gloat.

A reflection

The day Abu Bakr recited it

Sahih al-Bukhari records the day this ayah was most needed. The Prophet ﷺ had died. Abu Bakr was away at al-Sunh, on the edge of Madinah. Umar stood in the mosque and swore: by Allah, the Messenger of Allah has not died. Allah will raise him, and he will cut off the hands and feet of men who say so.

Abu Bakr arrived. He went in, uncovered the Prophet's face and kissed him. He said: may my father and mother be your ransom. You were good in life and good in death. By the One in whose hand is my soul, Allah will never make you taste two deaths.

Then he went out and told Umar, gently, to sit. He praised Allah and said: whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad has died. Whoever worships Allah, Allah is alive and does not die. And he recited: you will surely die, and they will surely die. Then he recited: Muhammad is only a messenger; messengers have passed away before him (3:144).

One commentary notes this as one purpose of the ayah. The believers were not to dispute about his death, as other nations disputed about theirs. When Umar denied it, Abu Bakr argued from this ayah, and Umar held back.

Picture a family gathered in a hospital corridor on the worst night of their lives. The youngest son cannot accept the news; he insists the doctors are wrong. The eldest daughter, who has been with their mother all week, sits beside him, takes his hand, and says quietly what they all know. Sometimes love's first duty is to say the true thing. Abu Bakr did that, with an ayah, for an entire community.
