Ghafir 40:82

“Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Earlier nations were more numerous, stronger and left greater marks on the earth, yet everything they earned could not save them; travel, and look.

A reflection

The surah ends where it began

A-fa-lam yasīrū fī al-arḍi fa-yanẓurū. Have they not travelled through the land and looked?

This question has been asked before, in this very surah. Near its beginning, almost the same words appear: have they not travelled through the land and seen the end of those before them? They were stronger than them in power and in traces on the earth, but Allah seized them for their sins (40:21).

Now, at the surah's close, the question returns. The surah has come full circle.

A theological commentary notices the careful order of the surah's ending. It set out a section on the proofs of Allah's divinity, power, mercy and wisdom. Then it followed it with a section of warning. The surah closes on the warning, and the warning begins with this question.

Between the two questions lies the whole surah. The believer in Pharaoh's court, the arguers and their pride, the call to supplicate, night and day, the stages of life, the Fire. The second asking carries all of that weight.

The same question also appears in other surahs (30:9, 35:44). It is one of the Quran's recurring invitations: go and look at what happened to those before you.

The structure itself is a lesson. The surah does not end with something new. It ends by returning to its opening, as if to say: now that you have heard everything in between, hear this question again. It means more the second time.

That is how a good teacher ends a course: by asking the first question again, and seeing how differently the students answer. The question has not changed. The listener has, or should have.

For a reader who has walked through the whole surah, it is worth asking: how do I answer it now?
