Ghafir 40:84
“And when they saw Our punishment, they said, "We believe in Allāh alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Only when they saw Allah's might did they say the words of faith, renouncing their false gods: the right words, spoken too late.
A reflection
The hard edge of His might
Fa-lammā raʾaw baʾsanā. Then, when they saw Our might.
The word baʾs has a hard picture in the lexicons. The hard edge of a thing. The force in iron. Might in war. And Allah's punishment when it falls. This is established. A concise commentary glosses it: the severity of Our punishment. A narration-based commentary: the punishments that came down on them.
Notice the pronoun: baʾsanā, Our might. Allah speaks of His own power. Not a natural disaster, not bad luck. His might, which the deniers had mocked, arrived.
The effect on them was immediate. People who had swaggered, argued and laughed at the messengers suddenly found the right words. We believe in Allah alone. The ego that had seemed so solid collapsed the moment it met real power.
That is a hard truth about pride. It is usually confident only as long as nothing tests it. Faced with genuine might, it folds.
A man spends years telling everyone that the sea at his favourite beach is safe in any weather. The lifeguards are fussing over nothing, he says. One autumn afternoon, a rip current takes him out in seconds. As the lifeguard reaches him, he is clinging to the rescue board, shaking, repeating: thank you, thank you, you were right.
Some may feel uneasy: does Allah want people to believe only out of terror? The ayah answers that clearly, with the next one: their faith did not benefit them. Faith forced by the sight of punishment is not what He asked for. He asked for faith in response to signs: night and day, the earth and sky, the messengers' clear proofs. Those were offered gently, for a lifetime.
Might is the last resort, not the first invitation. The ego that waits for it has waited too long.
