Az-Zukhruf 43:75

لَا يُفَتَّرُ عَنْهُمْ وَهُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَ

“It will not be allowed to subside for them, and they, therein, are in despair.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every pain in this world has its lull; this one has none, and those in it fall silent, without hope or argument.

A reflection

The fever that never breaks

Lā yufattaru ʿanhum: it is not eased for them. The root f-t-r gave the first hearers an everyday picture. Hot water fatara when it cooled to lukewarm. Heat fatara when it abated. A worker who flagged fatara in his work. Futūr is stillness after sharpness, softness after force.

Two classical linguists explain this ayah with a phrase from ordinary life. Fatarat ʿanhu al-ḥummā: the fever eased off him, settling a little as its heat lessened. Another commentator adds that the root, in every form, points to weakening.

So the ayah describes a fever that never has its lull.

That is worth sitting with, because it reveals something about this world by contrast. In this life, almost every pain has a fatra. The worst toothache has a quieter hour. Grief comes in waves, and between waves there is breath. Even long illness has better days.

Picture a woman who has lived with severe migraines for fifteen years. On the bad days the pain fills everything. But she has learned that on almost every bad day there are twenty minutes, usually mid-afternoon, when it eases a little. She uses that window to pray. She calls it her gap. Over the years she has come to see the gap as a gift, small and dependable, a sign that she is not forgotten.

The ayah's description of the Fire is the removal of every such gap. And that turns our attention back to this life. The lulls in our suffering are not accidents. They are mercies, given by a Lord who does not let any pain here run without pause.

So the warning holds a quiet instruction. Notice your fatra. Thank Allah for the easing hour, the better day, the space between the waves. In this world, every fever breaks. That fact itself is a sign of Who is caring for you.
