Ad-Dukhan 44:33

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَـٰٓؤٌا۟ مُّبِينٌ

“And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah gave the Israelites signs no other people had seen, and inside every one of them, blessing and test were folded together in plain view.

A reflection

The sound is not yours

Wa-ātaynāhum mina al-āyāt: and We gave them signs.

The commentaries list what those signs were. The sea split open for them. Clouds shaded them in the desert. Manna and quails came down as food. One commentary adds that these were great signs whose like Allah had not shown to any other people.

Notice the grammar. We gave. The sea did not split because the Israelites were strong swimmers. The clouds did not gather because they were good at weather. Every one of these signs pointed away from the people who received it, towards the One who sent it.

The lexicons give āya the picture of a waymark on a desert road. You do not stop and admire the post. You read where it points.

A foundation lends a young violinist a priceless instrument, three centuries old. Audiences gasp at the tone. Critics praise him. After a year, he starts to talk about "my sound". One evening an older player borrows the violin for ten minutes. The same tone fills the room. The young man goes quiet. The sound was never entirely his.

That is the ego's oldest mistake with gifts. Health, intelligence, a stable home, a moment of clarity in prayer: each is a sign given. Each is a waymark. The ego reads them as a mirror instead.

Does Allah list His gifts because He wants to be praised for them? The surah's setting suggests otherwise. The list is told to proud deniers in Makkah, who thought their prosperity was their own. He needs no thanks. They needed the reminder of who gives, before they mistook the waymark for themselves. So do we, each time a gift makes us feel large.
