Al-Ahqaf 46:2

تَنزِيلُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ

“The revelation of the Book is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”

Essence

For the third time the Book states its sender in the same words, the way a trusted sender always signs his letters the same way.

A reflection

A signature, not a boast

This exact sentence opens Az-Zumar, Al-Jathiyah and now Al-Ahqaf. One commentary explains the first name as a might that cannot even be approached, and the second as wisdom in every word and deed.

Is it vanity to keep announcing this? Picture an elderly man shown by his granddaughter how to check who really sent a text about his bank account. The genuine sender's name is not showing off. It is protection: this is who is speaking, so you can trust it.

The names work the same way. He needs no praise from us (35:15). But we badly need to know whose words we are holding. Our own ego, by contrast, guards its reputation constantly, because it can be challenged. His might cannot. So the humbling question is not whether He deserves the names. It is how much of my day goes into defending a name that was never mine to keep.
