Al-Fath 48:11

“Those who remained behind[1510] of the bedouins will say to you, "Our properties and our families occupied us, so ask forgiveness for us." They say with their tongues what is not within their hearts. Say, "Then who could prevent Allāh at all if He intended for you harm or intended for you benefit? Rather, ever is Allāh, of what you do, Aware.”

Essence

Those who stayed home offer a busy excuse and ask for prayers they do not mean; harm and benefit are Allah's alone, and He knows.

A reflection

Neither the house nor the road decides it

The stayers had made a calculation. The commentaries record it. They thought that staying home would keep harm away from them, and that safety at home would bring benefit sooner. The road to Makkah looked dangerous. The house looked safe.

Allah answers the calculation with one question. Who can hold back anything from Allah for you, if He intends you harm or benefit?

The verb is yamliku: to have a thing within your grip and power. Nobody has a grip on any part of what Allah decides. If He wills harm, the four walls of your house will not stop it. If He wills benefit, the dangers of the road will not block it. The house and the road are both under His hand.

Notice that benefit is named too, not only harm. One classical commentary explains why. The stayers feared harm on the road and hoped for gain at home. Both halves of their reckoning are taken out of their hands. What they ran from and what they ran towards belong to the same Lord.

Picture an investor who has spread his savings across forty funds. He calls it safety. He sleeps well. Then a single bad year touches every one of them at once. Diversifying was wise. Believing it made him untouchable was the mistake.

That is the ego this ayah shrinks. Our precautions are sensible, and Islam asks for them. But we slowly come to treat them as walls. We speak of being covered and protected, as if our planning had taken the matter out of Allah's hands.

Does Allah need to remind people of His power, as an insecure ruler might? No. The reminder is for the one who forgot. A person who thinks his own arrangements hold up his life is carrying a weight that was never his. Knowing that harm and benefit are in Allah's hand alone is not a threat. It is relief.
