Al-Fath · Madani · ayah 23 of 29
Al-Fath 48:23
سُنَّةَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِى قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّةِ ٱللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًا
“[This is] the established way of Allāh which has occurred before. And never will you find in the way of Allāh any change.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The promise that the deniers would have fled at Hudaybiyah is not a lucky guess; it is Allah's old, unaltered way.
A reflection
A stand-off placed inside a very old pattern
This line returns almost word for word at 33:62, and the fuller treatment of His unchanging way sits at 17:77. Here it does one particular job. The ayah before said that had Quraysh fought at Hudaybiyah, they would have turned their backs. This line explains why that was certain.
The believers had just signed a treaty that felt like defeat. The ego wants to read such a day through its own feelings: we backed down, so we were weak. The ayah lifts the day out of their hands and sets it inside a pattern that had already run its course before them. Their restraint was chosen, not forced on them.
Allah does not tell them this because He needs their applause. He tells them so that a humbled people stop measuring His help by how they feel in one afternoon.
