Ali 'Imran 3:125

“Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allāh and they [i.e., the enemy] come upon you [attacking] in rage, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks [of distinction]."”

Saheeh International

Essence

If you are patient and guard yourselves, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand marked angels.

A reflection

The guarantee is written for the worst case

A roofer's guarantee covers storm damage. Every competitor's warranty excludes it, in the small print, because storms are when roofs actually fail. He has not added a clause. He has removed the one everybody else relies on.

This ayah does something of that order, and one classical commentator sets out the logic precisely.

Read the conditions. If you are patient, and if you guard yourselves, and if they come at you at full pitch. Then your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand. Three conditions, and the third is odd. Why should the enemy's speed be a condition of your help.

The commentator's answer is the whole reflection. A sudden onrush, he writes, is normally the situation in which reinforcement cannot arrive in time. That is what speed does: it beats the relief column. So the promise is attached to that case, and the reinforcement is still guaranteed. Its arrival in every slower case is known all the more.

He puts it in one line. The promise was tied to the remotest supposition, so that its realisation in all the others would be known by stronger reasoning.

So the clause that looks like a restriction is the opposite. It is the clause nobody would dare write.

And here is where the ego, which has done its own promising, should go quiet. Think about how we actually give assurances. We pledge help, and then build in the exceptions that protect us. If I can. If nothing comes up. If it is not that weekend. If the money holds. The exceptions are not dishonest. They are the honest shape of a limited creature's word.

We are so used to that shape that we read it into His promises without noticing. Then we feel let down by a condition He never set.

Notice also the naming. Not Allah, but your Lord will reinforce you. The guarantee is issued under the relationship, not under a contract.

And the number rises rather than falls. The harder the case, the larger the figure. No insurer has ever written a policy in that direction, because no insurer has unlimited reserves.

So read your own promises this week. Find the exception you always keep in reserve, and ask whether the person you promised knows about it. Then make one promise with that clause removed.
