Al-Waqi'ah · Makki · ayah 59 of 96
Al-Waqi'ah 56:59
ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ
“Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?”
Saheeh International
Essence
A question with only one honest answer, asked about the one outcome in your life you had no hand in shaping.
A reflection
Hands that receive and do not make
A midwife's hands do a great deal and make nothing. They support, they turn, they catch. In the moment a child arrives there is more competence in that room than in most rooms on earth. And not one feature of the person handed over was decided by anybody in it.
That is the ayah, put as a question with two options and only one answer.
The commentaries read it as a formal argument rather than a flourish. One says: do you form a human being from it, or are We the ones who do? Then it names Him with two words: the Measurers, the Formers. And it draws the conclusion for the hearer. This is an argument against them and an explanation of the ayah before it. If you admit that We are its creator and none other, then acknowledge the raising.
So the ego is not being attacked here. It is being asked one question in the only place it has no answer ready.
And this is worth being precise about, because people hear it as an insult to human achievement and it is not. You can do a great many things. You can build, cure, calculate, cross oceans. The ayah does not touch any of that. It picks the single outcome you most want to claim and most obviously did not produce. Then it asks who did.
Someone may ask why Allah puts it as a question about Himself at all. He is free of all need (35:15). He tells us plainly that whoever strives, strives only for himself (29:6). A man who asks you to admit his part in something is asking for credit. Allah is removing a confusion.
And the plural form at the end is worth hearing: or are We the Creators. One commentary glosses it as the Measuring, the Forming. Not one act but a set of them, and not one of them yours.
The hands in the room were skilled. They caught what was handed to them.
