Al-Hadid 57:14
“They [i.e., the hypocrites] will call to them [i.e., the believers], "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves[1631] and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allāh. And the Deceiver [i.e., Satan] deceived you concerning Allāh.”

Essence
They stood in the same rows as the believers, but burned themselves, delayed, doubted and wished, until death came and the wishing ended.
A reflection
Were we not with you?
Yunādūnahum a-lam nakun maʿakum: they call out to them, were we not with you? The root of yunādūnahum is raising the voice so that it carries. It is also the root of nādī, the tribe's meeting circle, which the Arabs only called by that name while people were sitting in it. The hypocrites had sat in the circle. Now they are shouting across a wall.
One commentator says what "with you" must mean here: with you in acts of worship, in the mosques, in the prayers, on the expeditions. Another lists it from their side. We fasted as you fasted, prayed as you prayed, read as you read, gave as you gave. What has separated us today? A scholar of the heart says they remind the believers of it as a stranger reminds a local of the journeys they once shared.
And the believers answer honestly: balā, yes, you were. They do not deny the shared rows or the shared meals. An early scholar, the commentaries record, said the hypocrites lived alongside the believers, married among them and mixed with them.
Picture a woman whose name is on every email in her department, whose face is in every team photograph, who sits in every meeting. When the project succeeds she stands with the team at the party. But she never once did any of the work. Everyone in the photo was "with" everyone else. Only some were really there.
The ayah draws a hard line between proximity and belonging. Being among good people, in good places, doing the outward motions together, is a blessing. But it is not the same as the inner turning that makes those motions true. The question to ask is not only whether you are in the circle. It is whether, when you sit in it, your heart is sitting there too.
