Fatir 35:5
“O mankind, indeed the promise of Allāh is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and be not deceived about Allāh by the Deceiver [i.e., Satan].”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah's promise is true, so do not let the near life's surface, or the Deceiver's talk about Allah, catch you with your guard down.
A reflection
The promise comes first; the warnings follow from it
The ayah does not open with a warning. It opens with a fact: inna waʿda Allāhi ḥaqq, the promise of Allah is true. Only then comes the small letter fa, so. So do not let the near life deceive you. So do not let the Deceiver deceive you about Allah.
The order matters. The concise commentaries say what the promise is: the raising of the dead, the reward and the reckoning. Ḥaqq means more than accurate. It is something fixed and bound to happen, with no breaking of it. One commentary links the promise straight back to the line before: to Allah all matters are returned (35:4).
So the two warnings are not free-floating advice about being careful. They are consequences. If the promise is true, being deceived is simply failing to act on what you already know.
A tenant is handed a letter in October. Her lease ends on the last day of March, and it will not be renewed. She does not argue with the date. Her weekends change at once. She stops shopping for a new sofa for the flat. She starts measuring rooms elsewhere, sorting boxes, asking about schools. Nobody had to warn her against redecorating. The date did the warning.
That is how this ayah works. It does not shout 'hate the world'. It sets a date on the table and lets the date speak.
Seen this way, deception has one aim. It is not to make you deny the promise. Few people deny it outright. It is to make the date feel vague, so that you keep shopping for sofas.
Ask, then, where your own weekends show that you believe the letter. Belief in a promise is not measured by agreement. It is measured by packing.
