Al-Hadid · Madani · ayah 7 of 29

Al-Hadid 57:7

“Believe in Allāh and His Messenger and spend out of that in which He has made you successive inheritors. For those who have believed among you and spent,[1629] there will be a great reward.”

Essence

Believe, and spend from what you only hold on trust: it came from others, it will pass to others, and the wage is already promised.

A reflection

Spending from an account in Another's name

Mimmā jaʿalakum mustakhlafīna fīh: from what He has made you stewards over. The ayah could simply have said "spend from your wealth". Instead it reminds you, in the very command to give, whose wealth it is. The commentaries draw the meaning out plainly. The money in your hands is Allah's, because He created it and brought it into being. He placed it under your hand and let you benefit from it. In handling it you are an agent, a deputy, a steward. It is not truly yours.

Then they add a striking practical point. Spending should therefore feel easy, the way it feels easy to spend someone else's money when they have given you permission. Picture an office manager with the company card, paying for the whole team's lunch without a flicker of hesitation. That evening, at a supermarket till, she agonises over whether to add a second bag of fruit. Same woman, same hand, very different feeling. The difference is entirely in whose name is on the account.

One commentary records a Bedouin who was asked whom his camels belonged to. He answered: they are Allah's, kept with me. That is the posture the ayah is teaching.

Here the ego protests. I earned this. I worked the late shifts, took the risks, made the sacrifices. The effort was real and the ayah does not deny it. But who gave the health to work, the mind to plan, the opportunity that opened, the market that happened to want what you made? The earning was yours; the earning power was lent. Pride says "mine". Accuracy says "with me, for now".

That shift in wording changes everything about giving. You stop feeling robbed when you spend in His way, and start feeling like a trustworthy agent doing exactly what the Owner asked.
