Al-Hadid 57:6

“He causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night, and He is Knowing of that within the breasts.”

Essence

He threads night and day into each other a minute at a time, and knows what every chest is hiding.

A reflection

Nobody can move a single minute

Yūliju al-layla fī al-nahār: He threads the night into the day, and the day into the night. The commentaries explain it plainly. Whatever is taken from the hours of the night He adds to the day. Whatever is taken from the day He adds to the night. One early reading puts it in a single phrase: the shortness of one in the length of the other. Another describes the seasons: the short days of winter inside its long nights, the short nights of summer inside its long days.

Think of the night the clocks change. Across a whole country, people turn the hands of their watches back an hour. Phones do it on their own. The next morning there is talk of "an extra hour in bed". Yet the sun rose exactly when it was always going to rise. We moved a number on a dial. We did not move the morning.

That is the gap the ayah opens up. Every human being who has ever lived, working together, could not add a single minute of light to a winter afternoon. We can light our streets and black out our windows. We can fly east to chase the dawn. But the actual threading of light into darkness, a little each day, across the whole earth, is done by Another.

Pride rarely survives a long look at the sky. The ego tells us we are managers of our own time: our schedules, our productivity, our "hours". This ayah reminds us that the hours themselves are handed to us, lengthened and shortened by a Hand that never asked our opinion. We are not the owners of our days. We are their guests.

A humbling question follows naturally. If I cannot move one minute of daylight, what exactly am I so sure I control? The answer, honestly given, is very little. That honesty is the beginning of trust.
